ONE of the Island’s busiest roads will be closed in sections from next month to February 2027.

Grande Route de St Jean – St John’s Main Road – will be shut during various between the St Helier Parks Department, which is just north of Mont à l’Abbé School, to just north of Sion Village.

Like the recent closure of St Peter’s Main Road, which will send traffic down byroads and Green Lanes for six months, the road works along St John’s Main Road are to upgrade the drains, which are at capacity in the area.

The existing 400 mm pipes will increase to 600 mm pipes.

The sections of the road works. Diversions will be publicised nearer the time.

The project has been split in sections to reduce disruption, with road closures limited to those sections.

The Infrastructure and Environment Department, which is overseeing the work, say that there will be two contractors working at the same time to help complete the project as quickly as possible, which means that there could be more than one section of Grande Route de St Jean closed at a time.

The first section to close – from 3 November until next February – will be a section north of Rue de Maupertuis, which is just north of the Union Inn, to the crossroads with Rue de Becquet Vincent and Ruette Pinel.

That is the crossroads that leads to Surville Cemetery to the west and the northern access to Rondels Farm Shop to the east.

Diversion routes will be publicised nearer the time.

From late January, the main road’s junction with Vert Chemin, which is opposite the St Helier Parks Department, will close until mid-March.

That month, Grande Route du Mont a l’Abbe will also close across its junction with Le Vert Chemin.

It comes after the JEP reported earlier this week how parishioners described roads around St Peter’s Village as the ‘Wild West’ as drivers sped through green lanes and ignored temporary signs that will be in place for the next six months.

I&E is holding several public ‘drop-in sessions’ from next week to explain more about the St John’s Main Road project. The first is on Tuesday at the Town Hall from 10am to 11.30am.
