A MAN accused of raping a woman in a St Helier bedsit has been discharged from proceedings after the Royal Court jury failed to reach a verdict.

Adelino Moreira (65) was alleged to have raped the woman in 2023 after meeting her in a nightclub while she was out with friends.

The woman reported the incident months later, after disclosing it to her husband, who encouraged her to contact police.

Mr Moreira, who did not give evidence in court and relied on what he said in police interview, accepted that sexual activity had taken place but insisted it was consensual and different from what the woman described.

Following a trial lasting three days and more than nine hours of deliberation, the jury failed to reach a unanimous or majority verdict on the rape charge and Mr Moreira was discharged from proceedings.

Deputy Bailiff Robert MacRae was presiding.
