Firefighters were called to multiple kitchen fires at the weekend – both caused by “unattended cooking” – prompting a safety reminder from the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service.

In a post on Facebook, a JFRS spokesperson said that firefighters responded to two incidents in St Helier – one at 21.30pm on Saturday and another at 5.30am on Sunday.

Both involved small kitchen fires caused by “unattended cooking”.

“While fire damage was limited the smoke emissions were a hazard to health and filled both properties,” the JFRS spokesperson continued.

“At the early morning incident, one adult required assistance to evacuate from the property and was assessed and treated for minor smoke inhalation by firefighters.

“Fortunately, further medical care was not necessary and this can be attributed to a working smoke alarm which alerted neighbours and resulted in our timely attendance.”

The post included a reminder about the importance of having working smoke alarms, as well as the risk of accidental fires that can result from leaving cooking unattended “or using the hob as an extension of the worktop”.

“However, the risk associated with alcohol consumption and cooking greatly increases the potential for physical harm should you fall asleep,” the spokesperson added.

“Please consider yourself and others when attempting to stave off hunger following a night out and make the choice not to cook but rather to enjoy takeaway food instead.”
