JERSEY Spartans are all set to present a thrilling throws fest tomorrow, competing against some exceptional talent in Winchester & District AC at the FB track.

Competition will be had across hammer, discus, javelin and shot, with the first event commencing at 10.30am.

Javelin promises to be an exciting contest, as local phenom and Island Games silver medallist Daniel Dubras headlines the field, coming up against the ESSA Intermediate Boys English Schools Championships gold medallist Ned Scott, who will be representing the visiting club.

Although Dubras now throws an 800g javelin, his personal best in the 700g category is 61.38 metres, narrowly edging ahead of the Englishman’s 61.07, making for what’s anticipated to be a tight battle.

Local athlete Sam Nicholson will be competing in the same age group as Dubras, also throwing the 800g javelin. Even though his PB is slightly lower, he’ll be more than eager to stake his claim.

Jersey will also be fielding a strong U13 girls and boys team, showcasing the Island’s up-and-coming talent.

Caesarean U20 ace Alex Wilkinson, who won bronze in both the Men’s U20 shot put and hammer events at this year’s Hampshire Track & Field Championships, will be eager to maintain his upward trajectory and build on his PB.

Catarina Hallden, Spartans’ throws coach, has confidence in his ability, saying “He’s looked great in training lately, and would love to improve his PB.”

Men’s Senior Alex Cotton is also on the hunt to better his PB, hoping to come back from injury with a bang.

On the female side of competition, Winchester will certainly be a force to be reckoned with, as U20 Hampshire County discus champion Erin McBriar set to compete in the hammer throw. Her stacked resume speaks for itself, with consistent high placings at the national level.

12-year-old starlet Aleksandra Pinel will be making a huge step up, as the Spartan is scheduled to throw the hammer as an U15 girl, meaning it will be 3kg. The step up isn’t fazing the local athlete, as Hallden commented that Pinel’s “very excited”.
Shot put won’t be without its clashes, as a very close competition between Islander Victoria Pinel and her Winchester adversary Darcey McBriar promises to bring the fireworks to FB.

Up-and-coming local talent Matt Harris will also be competing in the U15 class, eager to showcase his ability.

Discus always has the potential to be a very tight battle, as the event holds a lineup of very talented throwers across different age groups. Jersey’s squad are certainly in good stead to perform, as “training has gone very well”.

Event Timetable:
Hammer – set to commence at 10.30am
Discus – scheduled to start at 12pm
Javelin – set to begin at 1.30pm
Shot put – slated for a 3pm start
