ISLAND Energy has installed ten kilometres of new gas pipes in the last seven months, it has emerged, and they are designed to last until 2125.

In an update on progress of upgrades to the underground gas network across Jersey, the energy firm confirmed it had replaced and installed more than 10km of new pipework since February this year.

The distance is equivalent to around four times the length of Victoria Avenue.

A spokesperson for Island Energy explained that the new pipes are “designed to last over a century” and are “modern, safe and resilient”, ready for the introduction of greener gases when the time comes.

Asked about how many emergency calls the service had received from Islanders, Island Energy added that it hears on average two reports every day of unusual smells.

Although, it added that three quarters of those calls “turn out to not be gas related, but when gas is found, about half of those cases originate from appliances, such as boilers and cookers”.

The spokesperson added : “We take all reports of potential gas escapes seriously, and encourage the public to call us immediately if they notice a smell that could be gas. Our priority is public safety.”

“We would like to thank Islanders for their patience while we carry out upgrades.”

If you suspect a gas escape, you can contact Island Enery through their 24-hour emergency helpline 01534 755555. Engineers aim to attend within sixty minutes and will carry out safety checks with sensitive detection equipment.
