REMEDIAL works on the arrivals building at Jersey Airport could begin later this year, if plans are approved.

A planning application by Ports of Jersey is seeking permission to make the listed 1930s building wind and water-tight.

It also proposes removing asbestos and stripping out defunct mechanical and electrical services.

A statement from the organisation said the work is to ensure the building’s conservation is fully considered in future development plans, including retention of the external ‘Etats de Jersey 1937’ crest and its character as an “important inter-war building”.

Airport director Ashley Maggs said: “As part of our airport redevelopment, the 1937 Arrivals building now has a clear future: we want to use this iconic building to showcase our cultural heritage.

“The planned renovations at this time are minor in scale and would only affect parts of the 1937 terminal that have already been substantially altered.

“We will protect the building’s surviving historic character, while allowing for the safe removal of asbestos.

“We are fully committed to protecting the special interest of the historically significant building.”
