A barbecue fire at a St Helier flat – that left the occupier with minor injuries – was swiftly dealt with by the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service earlier this evening.
Emergency services responded to multiple calls about the fire, which had broken out on the second-floor balcony of a block of flats on La Route du Fort, shortly after 8pm.
Two fire engines carrying nine firefighters were quickly dispatched from their town headquarters and arrived within minutes.
In a statement, a JFRS spokesperson said crews were met with a barbecue “well alight”.
“Given the type of building involved, additional resources were mobilised to HQ to provide backup in case they were required,” the statement continued.
“Firefighters quickly deployed a hose reel to extinguish the blaze before it could spread internally into the property.”
They added that the occupier of the flat sustained minor burn injuries to their hand, but did not need to go to hospital.
“The swift actions of the attending crews prevented the fire from escalating and causing further damage.”
Watch Commander Ryan Hall said: “We would strongly urge all residents to refrain from having barbecues on balconies.”
He continued: “The risks are significant – not only to yourself, but to other residents in the building. Fires in such locations can spread extremely quickly and put many lives at risk.
“We encourage everyone to enjoy barbecues in safe, open outdoor spaces, well away from buildings and flammable materials.”
