The Battle of Flowers officially bounced back yesterday as the day parade welcomed hundreds of eager spectators to the streets of central St Helier.
It will come as a sigh of relief for the new organisers of the event who fought to salvage one of Jersey’s most beloved traditions after it looked to be on the brink of financial collapse.
Nineteen flowered floats, several entertainers, local dance troupes, musicians, and costumed performers made their way around a circular route from the float compound at the Esplanade, down Route de la Liberation, then into Conway Street, through York Street and into the Parade before heading down Gloucester Street.
And the new route – in place for the scaled-down 2025 edition – appeared to be a hit with those who lined the street of town – although the organisers have said they envision the event’s long-term future returning to the Avenue.
Though exhibitors’ floats were smaller and fewer this year, yesterday’s floral event lost none of its magic with the crowds perhaps even more enthusiastic given there had been the prospect of no Battle at all this year.
Although most were glad to see the historical event alive and kicking in 2025, not forgetting the free viewing fee, others will be feeling out of pocket after it emerged earlier this week that taxpayers would be footing the bill for more Battle debts from 2024.
Tonight, the annual Evening Parade returns to the same route through from 7.30pm to 9pm with illuminated floats. Once again, there is no charge to see the spectacle.
A firework finale is set to take place around Liberation Square and the Weighbridge between approximately 9.30pm and 10pm.
