ST CATHERINE’s steamiest seaside fixture could be sticking around until 2027 – if plans to extend the mobile sauna’s stay get the go-ahead.

Permission for Sauna Society Cole McLean’s St Catherine’s fixture is currently due to expire in September, but he has now put forward a planning application to extend approval for his mobile sauna at St Catherine’s Breakwater by another 18 months.

The application was submitted “well in advance of the expiry date” to “avoid disruption to this well-functioning, low impact business and to continue supporting Islanders in their consistent health routines”, according a letter to planning from Tom McAviney, of 9X5 Architects.

Mr McAviney said they hoped this would allow “sufficient time” for the application to be determined without the business needing to be removed from the site.

The sauna first opened in St Ouen’s Bay and later moved to the top of the slip at St Catherine’s but was forced to move again next to the Jersey Canoe Club – where it has operated since – due to what Mr McLean described at the time as planning “red tape”.

The sauna features a Finnish woodburner, cold showers and a large glass window facing St Catherine’s Bay.

Separately, Mr McLean has submitted plans to build a new wellness club at the Waterfront featuring sauna pods, ice bath and a therapy pool which he said would “breathe new life into the area”.

The Sauna Society founder has said he is also working on opening a third site in the west of the Island.
