HOPES that public toilets at La Pulente would reopen for the summer are dwindling, with “technical and legal issues” still unresolved, according to the Infrastructure Minister.

The former toilet block, which was converted into a café and sold by the Government for £100,000 in 2014, briefly operated as ‘Nude Dunes’ before the business went bust in late 2023.

Since then, there has been mounting pressure to restore public access to the toilets, with St Brelade Deputy Montfort Tadier organising a beach protest last summer to highlight concerns over privatisation of the coastline.

The site’s owner later submitted plans to turn the building into a self-catering holiday unit with an attached café and toilets, but these were rejected by Planning and the Environment Minister.

Infrastructure Minister Constable Andy Jehan previously stated the Government would act to reopen the toilets for summer. However, in a recent written response to Deputy Tadier, he said officials were still exploring possible solutions with the owner.

He described discussions as “active and ongoing”, but ruled out temporary loos nearby due to land ownership and planning complications, adding: “At present, the focus is on options which would ensure public access to the existing toilets.”
