COUNTING of votes in Guernsey’s second-ever island-wide election was completed in around eight hours yesterday.
After 72% of those registered had cast their votes before the polls closed at 8pm on Wednesday, the results were announced at 4.40pm yesterday, with 38 new States Members elected from a total of 82 candidates.
Deputy Lyndsay de Sausmarez, first elected in 2016, topped the poll with 10,721 votes, while the lowest vote for a successful candidate was 38th-placed Sarah Hansman Rouxel with 5,458 votes
The turnout of 72.13% was down from 79% at the 2020 election. A government spokesperson said the average voter turnout across the British Isles in the last five years was around 54%, although Guernsey’s total number of registered voters –27,293 – were drawn from an estimated total population of 65,000.
Ministerial roles in the new Guernsey government are expected to be decided in the coming days ahead of retiring ministers, including Chief Minister Lyndon Trott, officially step down on 30 June.
