A LOW-water fisherman has been fined after being caught with 34 ormers – 14 more than the daily limit.

Shatteppa Chavan appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this week for breaching sea fisheries regulations.

The 41-year-old pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined £250.

Ormers – also known as abalone – are a shellfish found in the far regions of the Island’s inter-tidal zone which can only be fished at very low tides and are considered a traditional delicacy.

During “ormer season”, there is a maximum daily bag limit of 20 per person.

The government’s marine resources team said that the ormer season was now closed until October.

Further information, including permitted dates to gather ormers, can be found on the Jersey government site.

Ormers are known as abalone in California, paua in New Zealand and awabi in Japan.
