Deputy Gorst with Lord Ricketts when the Franco-British Council partnership was signed

A FIVE-YEAR cross-border deal has been agreed which Jersey’s government hopes will “strengthen” historic ties between the Island and its “close neighbours” the UK and France.

The agreement – due to run until 2030 – follows Franco-British Council talks held in Jersey last year.

External Relations Minister Ian Gorst said fostering Jersey’s international reputation was a “key focus” for the government.

As part of the deal, Jersey is to host further visits and events in partnership with the council and the Island will gain two places under the Franco-British Young Leaders Programme (FBYL) every year. The initiative for under 40s “brings together rising talent” to shape the future of the bilateral relationship between the UK and France.

James Linder, a senior manager at PwC Channel Islands, and Victor Guerin, a visual artist, have been announced as the first two Islanders to be picked for the FBYL, joining a network of 176 alumni.

External Relations Minister Ian Gorst said: “Developing Jersey’s international reputation is a key focus of this government and I’m encouraged by the opportunities this agreement will bring.

“The partnership strengthens our shared commitment to cross-border collaboration and is a result of direct engagement with the Franco-British Council here in Jersey in 2024.

“Through the Young Leaders Programme in particular we have a scheme that empowers Islanders to develop their personal and professional skillsets, while deepening Franco-British relationships for the benefit of future generations.”

Lord Peter Ricketts, who chairs the Franco-British Council (UK), said: “Given Jersey’s close ties of history and geography to both the UK and France, it makes every sense that we put the partnership the Franco-British Council has already begun to build with the Government of Jersey onto a longer-term footing. We are excited to work with the Jersey team on a wide range of subjects.”

Hervé Mariton, chair of the Franco-British Council (France), added: “As close neighbours with deep-rooted cultural and historical connections, France values its relationship with Jersey. This partnership is a welcome opportunity to reinforce cooperation and mutual understanding, and we look forward to building on our shared interests.”
