THE threat of cyber attacks to Jersey – in the form of disruption to the Island’s food supply – has been highlighted by the Jersey Cyber Security Centre as it urges Islanders to take up free educational sessions.

The JCSC’s director Matt Palmer said: “We don’t need to look far to understand the ways that a cyber attack could affect Jersey: in the last two months, we’ve seen disruption to our food supply because of cyber attacks affecting the Coop and Marks and Spencer.

“Although both incidents were complex, many of the cyber security incidents we see in Jersey could have been prevented by simple, straightforward steps that most of us could do.”

Supermarkets around the Channel Islands were also heavily impacted by cyber attacks in the UK last month.

Mr Palmer said his organisation was running sessions over the next couple of months so the public can get “an introduction to cyber security”.

The events include a session for providers of “critical national infrastructure” – including energy supply, water supply and transportation – on 2 July, one for small businesses and charities on 7 August and an event for the hospitality sector on 3 November.

Sessions – which Islanders can attend at the JCSC’s operations centre at 1 Seaton Place or online – can be booked via: https://www.eventbrite.com/o/jersey-cyber-security-centre-37649483383#collections
