THE Home Affairs Minister is “considering” how a scheme allowing French day-trippers to travel to Jersey on their ID cards will “operate in practice” after politicians voted for extending the initiative.
Deputy Mary Le Hegarat said the process would “take some time” before she was able to “engage with” UK ministers.
The post-Brexit scheme is due to run until September but States Members voted this week to extend it following a proposition from Deputy Philip Bailhache.
Deputy Le Hegarat will need to find an exemption for Jersey to the Electronic Travel Authorisation regime expected to be brought in by the UK later this year.
In a statement provided to the JEP, Deputy Le Hegarat said: “I supported the States Assembly’s unanimous decision and am now considering how such a scheme will continue to operate in practice.
“Once I have identified a preferred approach, I will need to engage with the UK Government to inform them of our decision. That process will take some time, so I’m not in a position to comment further at this stage.”
