THE launch of a new inter-island ferry service marks “a significant step forward” for connectivity between Jersey and Guernsey, according to Ports of Jersey.
Islands Unlimited launched its foot passenger service between Jersey and Guernsey this week, following delays due to bad weather.
San Pawl arrived in the Elizabeth Harbour on its maiden voyage on Thursday.
Ports said: “We’re pleased to welcome the launch of Islands Unlimited’s new inter-island ferry service, which marks a significant step forward in enhancing connectivity between Jersey and Guernsey. “
Concerns have been raised about a lack of inter-island connectivity after Jersey and Guernsey opted for separate ferry operators. DFDS is yet to launch an inter-island timetable while Brittany Ferries operates one service a week – both companies have been approached for comment.
Islands Unlimited chief executive Captain Chad Murray called Thursday’s return sailing by the 316-passenger vessel a “milestone achievement”.
“Everything went relatively to plan. It’s only the second time that we’ve visited St Helier,” he said.
Capt Murray said it was “good to see people on-board” and he was pleased that they were able to offer a day-trip service.
“We believe that there is demand, certainly in peak season, for daily inter-island services,” said Capt Murray.
“Regular and reliable” daily services would benefit “both economies of Jersey and Guernsey”, the chief executive added.
Bookings currently run until September but Capt Murray said: “We are aware that there appears to be demand to run a service all-year round, albeit a reduced service.”
