ISLANDERS are being urged to sign up as volunteers for this year’s air display, with organisers offering “behind-the-scenes access” – and even the chance to fly in a classic aircraft – in return.
With the 2025 International Air Display set to return on Thursday 11 September, the team behind the event said they are aiming to deliver “one of the best” shows since before the pandemic – but need extra hands to make it happen.
In return, organisers have said that volunteers can expect a “friendly, family atmosphere” and opportunities to meet pilots, get close to the aircraft, and in some cases, fly in them.
This year’s four-hour flying display over St Aubin’s Bay already includes 14 confirmed aircraft, including the RAF Typhoon, Falcons Parachute Display Team, the Royal Navy’s Black Cats Helicopter Display Team, and historic and military aircraft such as the Catalina flying boat, Fairey Swordfish, and Fokker D.XXI.
The RAF Red Arrows, who missed last year’s event due to a tour of Canada, will return as the headline act.
A static aircraft display will also return to the Airport on Wednesday 10 September for the first time in five years, and the Lower Park will again host hospitality areas, food stalls, military vehicles, and other interactive activities in the area between St Aubin’s Road and Victoria Avenue.
Funding remains an issue for the team, with organisers due to launch a crowdfunding page to secure the money for more aircraft, including the Saab Draken and Viggen jets.
As well as not having its star attraction, last year’s event faced uncertainty and setbacks, including funding concerns.
Islanders ultimately raised over £30,000 to help bridge a “shortfall in financial support.”
The crowdfunding was in addition to the government’s contribution of at least £40,000, though organisers had stressed the grant was lower than in previous years.
The organisers of this year’s event have also appealed to businesses for sponsorship.
A spokesperson said: “We can offer a great deal in return – positive publicity for supporting one of the Island’s favourite free events, flights in classic aircraft, behind-the-scenes access to aircraft and aircrews including the Red Arrows, the opportunity to go Wing Walking and hospitality before, during, and after the air display at the air display Welcome Reception at Government House, to watch the air display on the Lower Park and at the Thank You Party at La Mare Wine Estate.”
