SOME of the world’s most renowned long-distance swimmers are heading to Jersey this weekend.

The International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame will stage its annual awards and induction event at the Hotel Ambassadeur on Saturday, part of a three-day programme of activities.

Eight-time English Channel swimmer Sally Minty-Gravett, who was inducted into the hall of fame in 2006, is hosting the weekend, which will be attended by more than 20 fellow inductees, with a total of around 90 visitors attending Saturday’s gala dinner.

Mrs Minty-Gravett said the programme would also include a welcome reception on Friday evening, an Island tour, a swimming conference at Havre des Pas Lido and several opportunities for attendees to don their costumes and enjoy a swim.

“I go to these celebrations every year to catch up with the worldwide swimming family – and also help celebrate the new inductees,” she said. “It’s very exciting to be hosting visitors from all over the world.”
