A SPECIAL set of stamps has been issued to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Jersey’s Liberation.

Jersey Post will be issuing the “80 Yrs Liberation” stamps from Rue de Pres and its Post & Go machine at its Broad Street office from Thursday 8 to Monday 12 May.

Depicting the Jersey flag, Islanders will be able to use the stamps on letters destined for the UK and around the world.

They will also be available for purchase online.

Customers will also be able to learn from a dedicated display at the Broad Street office, depicting what communication was like for civilians and postal workers from 1940-1945, through which the St Helier postal branch remained in operation, albeit under intense surveillance.

A series of stories, pictures, original artwork and stamps from the five-year period will be showcased to commemorate the important role the Post Office played in maintaining civilian communications during that time.

Under German rule, a new postal entity appeared in Jersey in January 1941, the German Field Post Office 372 at 12–14 Beresford Street, to exclusively serve the occupying forces.

German soldiers received and sent mail through their own secure channels, bypassing local staff entirely.
