ELECTRIC car owners will now find the cost of charging their car at a public station more expensive from today due to new higher rates.
Charging an electric vehicle (EV) at any of Jersey Electricity’s Evolve charging stations will increase by up to 33% for registered users.
For fast chargers, users will pay 30p per kWh during peak times, rising from 24p—an increase of 25%.
During off-peak times, EV users of fast chargers will pay 15p per kWh, rising from 12p.
Additionally, EV users of rapid and ultra-rapid chargers will be charged 32p during peak times, rising from 24p per kWh—an increase of 33%.
Rapid and ultra-rapid users during off-peak times will also be charged 16p per kWh, rising from 12p.
Drivers paying using contactless credit or debit cards at the public charging points will also incur a 10% extra fee.
It is the second price rise Jersey Electricity has introduced since the public charging network was introduced over six years ago.
Commenting on the move, Jersey Electricity said the reasons for the increases were the “continued investment in the island’s public charging infrastructure”.
“JE is continuing to invest heavily to expand and improve the network,” the utility firm said.
The company said a new 150kW ultra-rapid charger will soon be installed in Gorey, following the recent addition of the island’s second charger in St Aubin.
They confirmed that further fast and rapid chargers will also be introduced across the island in the coming months.
A spokesperson for Jersey Electricity said that “despite the price increase, charging an EV via Jersey’s public network remains extremely cost-effective”.
“The Evolve network continues to be significantly cheaper than many comparable networks in the UK and Europe,” the spokesperson said.
“Fast chargers [in Jersey] remain 43% cheaper than those in the UK, and the new daytime rate for rapid and ultra-rapid chargers will be 60% lower than a UK equivalent.”
