A 24-YEAR-OLD man who tried to bring cannabis into Jersey on the ferry has been fined £1,000 – and told to “grow up”.
Adam Ikbal arrived in the Island on Tuesday from Portsmouth, the Magistrate’s Court heard.
Legal adviser Harrison Gollop, prosecuting, said Ikbal was stopped by Custom officers who found a cannabis grinder and around one gram of cannabis in his bag.
Ikbal told them the small quantity was for his personal use as “a social cannabis user”.
Mr Gollop added that Ikbal had previous convictions in the UK for supplying the drug and possessing it with intent to supply.
Advocate Alexander English, defending, said Ikbal did not realise that by travelling to Jersey he was leaving the UK and entering a separate jurisdiction.
He added that Ikbal had to take care of his mother and brother, who both have health problems.
“He shoulders a great deal of responsibility,” the advocate said.
Magistrate Bridget Shaw said Ikbal’s failure to appreciate that Jersey was outside the UK made no difference, since possession of cannabis was illegal in both jurisdictions.
She told him: “You need to grow up. You do have responsibilities and you have to understand that with those responsibilities your chances to do exactly what you want are limited.”
