A 60-YEAR-OLD man who shouted racial abuse at a barman who refused to serve him has been fined £1,000.
John Morton Steel was captured on CCTV footage from inside the Goose on the Green pub in St Peter at around 9pm on 18 October, swearing and telling the member of staff to “go back home”.
A friend was seen intervening and advising Steel to leave the pub but on his way out Steel was heard shouting “Allah, Allah, Allah” at his victim.
St Peter Centenier Joao Camara, prosecuting, told the Magistrate’s Court that Steel had been drinking elsewhere and initially came into the pub asking for a taxi number.
He was provided with one and left but later returned to the pub and tried to order a drink. When he was refused service due to being intoxicated he became angry and shouted racial abuse.
In court, he admitted one charge of being drunk and disorderly.
Advocate Stephen Wauchope, defending, said Steel had no memory of the incident and added: “When he saw that video he was stumbling over himself to apologise.
“He does not consider himself racist and has no problem with foreign people. He is absolutely mortified by what he has done.”
Imposing the fine, Magistrate Bridget Shaw told Steel: “It is a duty for a barman not to serve people who are already drunk.
“This was not just shouting in a pub. A significantly aggravating feature is that this was racial abuse.”
