A TRAVELLING exhibition showing off works by one of Jersey’s most successful artists is due to conclude this weekend.

The drawings by Henry Thomas Bosdet are on display at the church of St Aubin on the Hill, following exhibitions at St Martin’s and St Mary’s churches.

The church is also celebrating being able to open again following year-long major works on its roof.

Jersey-born Bosdet trained at the Royal Academy for seven years before teaching there, as well as creating the designs for stained-glass windows in the UK, Jersey, the Netherlands, as well as in destinations as far-flung as St Helena and the legislative buildings of Barbados.

In Jersey, his legacy is protected by the Glass Rainbow Trust, which organised the exhibitions and collaborated with Jersey Heritage to have many of the pieces restored.

The cartoons – detailed paper drawings which form the basis of the stained-glass windows – have been stored in archives since the artist’s death in 1934 and were restored with the help of funding from the Jersey Community Foundation.

St Aubin on the Hill’s Marriage of Cana window has been described as “arguably the finest of Bosdet’s larger windows” in the Island.

Nine sketches from this window are on display in the church, including four 11-foot high pieces and the original watercolour of the design approved by the Ecclesiastical Court.

The free exhibition runs until Sunday 6 April at the church of St Aubin on the Hill.
