ISLANDERS can now get free, simple tips on how to stay safe online in their email inboxes amid “worsening cyber security threats”, following the launch of a new initiative.

“Cyber Bytes”, which has been launched by the Jersey Cyber Security Centre, is an online newsletter which is sent out every six weeks.

The first edition is due to go out next week and will provide steps that small business, charities and individuals can take to protect themselves online. The newsletter was developed based on feedback from Islanders over the past 18 months.

Matt Palmer, director of JCSC, said: “Cyber Bytes has been designed to overcome some of the key barriers facing Islanders who want to improve their cyber security.

“Firstly, all of us live busy lives: it’s very unlikely that many people have time to go out and learn about cyber security. Secondly, Islanders have reported feeling overwhelmed by the volume, complexity, and ever-changing nature of cyber security.

“Finally, many may not be able to afford specialist IT support, and therefore might think there is nothing they can do.”

Deputy Moz Scott, an Assistant Economic Development Minister, said: “Islanders are rightly concerned about worsening cyber-security threats, and the increasing levels of online fraud and misinformation that are impacting our day-to-day lives.”
