A 20-YEAR-OLD man who smuggled cannabis into Jersey – and shouted racist abuse at the police officers who arrested him – has been bound over to be of good behaviour for three months.
The Magistrate’s Court heard that Rhylin Le Masurier brought 41 grams of the class B drug to the Island on 5 February.
Crown Advocate Lauren Taylor, prosecuting, said he was arrested for the offence on 13 February and shouted racist abuse at an Asian police officer.
The court heard that Le Masurier had numerous previous convictions and had breached past probation orders – most recently by going on holiday to Tenerife while banned from leaving Jersey.
He appeared in court via video link from HMP La Moye, where he has spent six weeks since being remanded in custody for the offences, with Relief Magistrate Sarah Fitz ruling that no further jail term was necessary.
But she told him: “I do believe that these incidents are serious. If you were older you would certainly deserve a prison sentence.”
