A JERSEY College for Girls student is set to represent the Island in the House of Commons today.

A-level student Cassie Graham will deliver a speech about Jersey’s economic growth and the need to diversify the Island’s labour market, in the 2025 session of UK Youth Parliament.

A former member of the Jersey Youth Parliament, she is one of 260 young people aged between 11 and 18 to take their place on the famous green benches for the 15th iteration of the annual debate.

The UK Youth Parliament held its debut sitting in the House of Commons in 2009, making history as the first time that the Chamber had been used by anyone other than elected Members of Parliament.

Cassie, who is in Year 12, was invited to take part by Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, alongside representatives from other Crown Dependencies and British Overseas Territories.

She is already making a name for herself in youth politics, having attended the British and Irish Council conference held in Jersey in 2023, as well as that year’s Youth Conference in London.

Cassie also attended the Normandy Peace Forum last September in Caen.

Ahead of the session, Sir Lindsay said he was “very proud” that this year’s UK Youth Parliament will hear from such a “broad range of young voices”.

He said: “I cannot wait to hear the thoughts and views of young people from across the UK, the British Overseas Territories, and the Crown Dependencies on the issues that matter to them.”
