THE JEP is assisting a historian from Madeira in his research into the Island and its links to Jersey.
Duarte Mendonça is also collaborating with both Jersey and Madeiran authorities to research significant events relating to the Madeiran community.
Mr Mendonça’s research began with a Madeiran immigrant who arrived in Jersey in 1904 and died in 1942, pre-dating the wave of immigrants who arrived from 1948 onwards to work in the hotel industry.
In June 1971, this newspaper ran a photo contest, with Mr Mendonça managing to find a mention of the winner in a Madeiran newspaper as being Mr and Mrs H S Baldock, store owners in St Helier.
They won the competition in 1971, with the first prize being a two-week trip to Madeira, where they arrived in 19 February 1972.
Mr Mendonça is now asking JEP readers for their help and wants to hear from anyone who knew Mr and Mrs Baldock or their descendants.
He said it would be fascinating to discover any photos taken by the couple during their stay in Madeira in 1972. These photographs, he said, could provide valuable insights into the experiences of Jersey residents visiting Madeira during that period.
Mr Mendonça said these contributions could “significantly” aid his research and help preserve the shared history between Jersey and Madeira.
