A 77-YEAR-OLD man who photocopied a car’s window insurance disc and placed the copies in three separate cars he owned has been fined a total of £5,750.

Barry Edward Truscott admitted the offence when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court and claimed he had been advised to copy the WIDs.

Assistant Magistrate Adam Clarke responded: “That is some of the worst advice I’ve ever heard anyone take.”

Truscott said he bought the cars in October last year but had been unable to park them in his property as roofers were working there and were occupying the space with their van, so he had instead parked them on the road outside. He added that he had only driven the cars 20 yards.

He added that his wife had died at around the same time, telling the court: “I’d just like to apologise.”

Mr Clarke described the case as “a strange mix of naivety and deliberate deception”.

But he accepted that the bereavement may have been partly to blame, saying: “You weren’t thinking as straight as you should have been.”

He fined Truscott £250 for each of three counts of driving without insurance and £5,000 for attempting to deceive the authorities with falsified documents.
