A 21-YEAR-OLD man who took a job as a delivery driver in order to pay a fine for careless driving has been handed another fine – for careless driving.
Jedson Landers was working for Domino’s Pizza, driving his green Ford Fiesta on St Saviour’s Road, when he hit the back of grey Citroen near the junction with Brooklyn Street.
St Helier Centenier Jane Pearce, prosecuting, told the Magistrate’s Court that a witness reported hearing “tyres screeching and a loud bang”. Both drivers were breathalysed but neither was found to have alcohol in their breath.
Ms Pearce said that Landers had three previous convictions for driving offences, all within a year of passing his test. Two were for speeding and were dealt with at parish hall level, while the other was for careless driving, for which he had been fined £1,300 in the Magistrate’s Court.
She said he had taken the delivery driver’s job in order to pay off that fine.
The road had been wet when the collision happened, at 6pm on 8 October last year.
Advocate Julia-Anne Dix, defending, said that Landers had nearly paid off the previous fine, and added: “He finds this deeply distressing. It was a brief lapse of judgment.”
Relief Magistrate Sarah Fitz imposed a fine of £1,500 and endorsed his licence, so that it will bear a record of the offence for three years.
She warned him: “If you are convicted for another motoring offence the court will be minded to disqualify you.”
