Man (21) admits assault after nightclub glass attack

The Magistrates Court

A 21-YEAR-OLD man threw a glass at another man in a town nightclub which smashed and left him with cuts to his face and neck, the Magistrate’s Court has heard.

Jakob Charlie Warwick Stanton yesterday admitted grave and criminal assault following the attack on 20 July last year.

The court was shown CCTV footage from inside the venue in which Stanton and the victim were seen arguing, after which the victim slapped Stanton in the face.

Stanton then threw punches towards the victim, the victim retaliated and Stanton threw the glass, which shattered in the victim’s face. An image was also displayed on the video screen showing the extensive cuts to the victim’s face and neck.

Legal adviser Luisa Stuart, prosecuting, said: “This was a deliberate attack. The glass was moved from one hand to the other.”

The Magistrate, Bridget Shaw, accepted there had been “some provocation” before Stanton threw the glass but told him: “The way you reacted was wholly out of proportion. It could have been so much worse.”

She agreed to deal with the case rather than refer it to the Royal Court, but said the ultimate sentence could be “at the top of the sentencing powers” of her court.

Stanton was released on bail until 11 March to allow time for a pre-sentence report.
