DIRECT flights from Jersey to Amsterdam could make a return as part of a drive to develop the Island’s air links, according to Ports of Jersey’s chief executive.
Matt Thomas, who recently revealed that Ports was speaking to easyJet about “a variety of European routes”, described Amsterdam as one of the larger “hubs” in the region.
His comments came after Economic Development Minister Kirsten Morel said the government had been “working closely” with Ports of Jersey as it looked to establish new air links for the Island.
Deputy Morel also said that “up to £2m” could be used to support the development of routes over the next two years.
It is not the first time that talk of expanding Jersey’s air connectivity has made headlines – similar discussions emerged after easyJet launched a new service from Jersey to Amsterdam in 2023, which was later abandoned.
A spokesperson for the airline said that, while it did not currently have plans to revive the route, “we continually keep our network under review to identify opportunities to offer more choice for our customers where there is an opportunity to do so”.
Commenting on the service’s demise, Mr Thomas said it had been introduced “as we were coming out of the pandemic” and that airlines had been “building their route networks again”.
“We got it maybe earlier than we could have hoped,” he explained.
“It was just getting to the stage where it was hitting its possibility thresholds.
“Normally you have a route for two to three years before making any decisions on it.”
Mr Thomas said he believed the Amsterdam route “could” return, describing the destination as one of the “big European hubs” alongside Paris and Frankfurt.
