ISLANDERS are being urged to check tide times “before venturing offshore” after the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service saved a woman and her dog near Seymour Tower.

The JFRS was called to use its inshore rescue boat on Monday afternoon when the woman, who had been walking back to shore, was forced to climb onto some rocks to avoid the rising tide.

In a statement, the service issued a reminder to both Islanders and visitors to check the tide times “before venturing offshore”.

It continued: “The tide comes up quickly and you could get cut off – we are often the ones coming to save you.”

Two people were left stranded at Seymour Tower in April last year, which marked the third such incident to happen along the south coast in the space of a week, prompting another reminder from the JFRS to check the tides before heading out.

Figures for strandings last year were described as “worrying” by the Coastguard.
