EVACUATED residents from more than 20 homes affected by a potential gas leak in the Springfield area were being offered hotel accommodation this evening as the investigation into the incident continued.
The evacuation had begun during the early afternoon after reports of a potential gas escape.
A spokesperson for Jersey Fire and Rescue gave an update shortly before 6pm, stating:
“The residents of the 21 Andium Homes properties, which were evacuated as a precautionary measure, are being offered hotel accommodation tonight, if they do not have anywhere else to go.
“Residents are also able to collect vital belongings from their properties, with the support of firefighters.
“We would like to thank those affected for their patience and cooperation.”
The affected homes do not have a gas supply, with the investigation focused on mains pipework in an adjacent street.
A spokesperson for Island Energy said: “Engineers are currently responding to a potential gas escape.
“Our team follows a very strict policy and procedure in the event of a gas escape and, when called to attend, use highly sensitive gas detection equipment, and follow a thorough investigation process on all call-outs, monitoring inside and outside properties within a wide radius to ensure safety.
“Working with Jersey Fire and Rescue, our engineers are currently on-site working to locate, and if found repair, any gas escape – the evacuation of homes and properties in the vicinity, in this case around 20 flats, is precautionary, and again is best practice in these situations.
The fire service said its advice remained for motorists to avoid the area with St Saviour’s Road having been reduced to one lane.
Islanders with concerns about potential gas leaks are reminded that the recommended course of action is to leave the property and call Island Energy on 755555.
