JERSEY Construction Council has issued a rallying cry to get the Island “building again” following the closure of another firm in the latest blow to the sector.

JeCC chairman Adrian De Gruchy said they were “deeply saddened” by the news that K-Land Construction had ceased trading with immediate effect.

The company, which was founded in 2011, carried out refurbishments, renovations and extensions at residential and commercial properties across the Island, including at the Biarritz Hotel in St Brelade.

The JEP has contacted the company regarding the reasons behind its decision but had not received a response by the time of going to print yesterday. A creditors’ meeting is due to be held later this month.

The announcement comes less than a year after Kalmac, MAC Energy and Eden Interiors – all part of the MAC Group – ceased trading, citing a “downturn” in the housing market, while 2023 also saw the collapse of building firms Camerons and JP Mauger.

Following these closures, the JCC highlighted the industry’s need for “site-ready projects”, with Mr De Gruchy previously citing Brexit, Covid, bank interest rates and “spiralling” material price increases as some of the factors that have had a “lasting effect” on the sector.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Mr De Gruchy said: “We are deeply saddened by the news about K-Land having to cease trading with immediate effect and the impact this has on their staff, sub-contractors and suppliers.”

He continued: “Whilst K-Land were not a member organisation of the JeCC, we are not privy to their business affairs, so we cannot comment on the specifics of their decision.”

Mr De Gruchy added: “Despite this and other recent business closures, the industry has a wide range of professional tradespeople, associated suppliers and consultants, with good long-term career prospects.

“We will continue to work on site-ready projects of all sizes and for private and public sector clients to #GetJerseyBuildingagain.”
