FOUR people were taken to the General Hospital by paramedics after a basement fire in a block of flats in St Helier.

Emergency services were called to the property at around 8pm last night (Wednesday) as the blaze spread through the property.

Jersey Fire and Rescue said three fire engines had attended, with firefighters in breathing apparatus entering the building and tackling the fire in an electrical cupboard.

A spokesperson said that one resident had been rescued from the top floor of the building, with a total of two adults and two children subsequently taken to the Hospital.

The service added: “Jersey Fire And Rescue, would like to remind everyone of the importance of having working smoke detectors within their properties and shared hallways.”

St Mark’s Road was closed for several hours before being reopened later in the evening.
