JERSEY is forecast to have a mild and windy start to 2025, but the weather is likely to turn colder within 24 hours of the new year being rung in.
The Island is expected to avoid the worst of the weather forecast for other parts of the British Isles, with yellow warnings across much of the UK and an amber rain warning for parts of Scotland, with annual Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh cancelled.
After largely dry weather on New Year’s Eve, Jersey Met is predicting a maximum temperature of 12°C for New Year’s Day, accompanied by winds ranging from Force Six to Eight.
“If you want to get outside to blow off the new year cobwebs, best to do so early,” said forecaster Dave Rigby. “There may be the odd shower during the morning and into mid-afternoon, but won’t amount to much.
“The weather front that’s due to pass over the UK will get to us later in the day, around mid afternoon, and it looks wet and windy for a few hours until late on Wednesday.”
Although the winds are set to drop by Thursday, the first working day of 2025, with a reasonable amount of sunshine, the Island’s maximum temperature is set to drop markedly to 7°C, with northerlies adding some windchill to conditions, and temperatures staying low – around 6°C – for Friday and Saturday, although conditions should be bright and mainly dry.
Eight separate weather warnings have been issued across the UK in the coming days, as the Met Office warns of “a wet and windy spell for many up into the new year”.
Much of the country will be braced for stormy conditions including rain and strong winds, with gusts of up to 70mph forecast in some areas.
An amber warning for rain is in force in parts of Scotland, as well as flood alerts and flood warnings – including a rare severe flood warning – across the rest of the nation.
Edinburgh’s street party, fireworks display and outdoor concert – headlined by Glaswegian rockers Texas – were cancelled on public safety grounds after the yellow warnings for wind and rain.
