A DRIVER walked away uninjured after their car hit a wall in St Helier this morning, sending a shower of debris onto the street below.

Neither the driver nor anyone else was injured as a result of the incident, which happened just before 7am on New Year’s Eve – an outcome described as “very lucky” by a police inspector.

The crash left the roadside wall on Pier Road partly demolished, with piles of masonry, including large capping stones, lying on Quai aux Marchands, which runs alongside English Harbour below, close to La Folie Inn.

Both roads were closed by police once officers arrived at the scene shortly afterwards, remaining shut while investigation work, and a clear-up of the mounds of debris, took place. The roads later re-opened.

The Audi Quattro car involved in the crash, which appeared to have struck the wall in two places, was left badly damaged, however police said that neither the driver nor anyone else in the vicinity had sustained injuries.

Duty inspector Lynda McKenna told the JEP just before 12pm that the roads were likely to remain closed for “some time” while the wall was made safe and Jersey Electricity staff checked a lamppost which was also struck.

“It was very lucky no-one was hurt,” she said. “If there’d been a car on the road below… well it doesn’t bear thinking about, but fortunately lots of people are off work and there wasn’t much traffic at that time.”
