THREE Islanders have been recognised in the New Year’s Honours List.

Two upstanding citizens were made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) while a third was given a British Empire Medal (BEM).

After spending the last 47 years helping the disability community in Jersey, Jeaninne Carey has been honoured with a BEM. Mrs Carey, who is learning difficulties co-ordinator with Jersey Sports Association for the Disabled, said she was “totally humbled” by the award.

For services to communities in both Jersey and Kenya, Ruth Smith has been given an MBE. Mrs Smith taught pupils in schools across the Island and ran Jersey Dyslexia Association for many years. She also set up and helps run a school in the Kenyan town of Malindi. She said she was “proud” to be honoured.

Meanwhile, chief officer at the Bailiff’s Chambers, Steve Cartwright, is now an MBE for services to community.

Mr Cartwright, who has helped to oversee high-profile events such as the King and Queen’s visit to Jersey this summer, said he was “chuffed to bits” with the honour and stressed that he was supported by a “great team”.
