SAFETY engineers and firefighters were called to a property in Bel Royal this morning following a report of gas being smelled, however this turned out to be a false alarm.
The incident came just four days after 50 homes on an estate in St Clement were evacuated as a result of a gas leak, with those affected having to spend Saturday night away from home before being able to return on Sunday.
A spokesperson for Jersey Fire and Rescue said: “At approximately 8.35am, the States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service was called to a smell of gas in a garage area of a property in Magnolia Villas, Bel Royal – Island Energy was in attendance.
“As per routine protocols, SJFRS carried out an inspection and handed over to Island Energy before standing down shortly after 9am.
The service has also re-emphasised its advice that Islanders should be cautious and immediately report if they smell gas, by calling Island Energy’s 24 hour emergency line 755 555. Precautions such as opening doors and windows, extinguishing naked flames or cigarettes and turning off appliances and the gas supply are also recommended.
A spokesperson for Island Energy said: ““Islanders may be aware that our gas engineers have been called to Magnolia Villas, Bel Royal today following a publicly-reported smell of gas. We would like to reassure Islanders that on this occasion no gas was detected.
“Island Energy has a very strict policy and procedure in the event of a gas escape and, when we are called to attend, we use a highly sensitive gas detection unit, and follow a thorough checking process on all call-outs. We monitor inside buildings and outside within a wide radius.
“We take all reports of potential gas escapes seriously and have a 24-hour emergency number [755 555], in place for the reporting of potential escapes.”
