Guilty of common assault after attacking woman

The Royal Court. (39506342)

A 57-YEAR-OLD man has been found guilty of common assault after attacking a woman in his flat.

Gerard Eamon Maguire was on trial in the Royal Court for grave and criminal assault but was convicted of the lesser offence.

He was said to have punched, kicked and squeezed the woman’s neck and dragged her by her hair, causing cuts and bruises to her face, shoulders, chest and arms, after she rejected a sexual advance.

Maguire claimed there had been some “pushing and shoving” as he tried to remove her from his property.

The jury of eight men and four women did not reach a verdict on the charge of grave and criminal assault but unanimously found him guilty of the lesser charge of common assault.

Maguire was released on bail and will be sentenced on 14 February.
