A MAN who tried to smuggle cocaine into Jersey – and deleted mobile phone messages that were evidence of drug dealing – has been jailed for one year and nine months.
The Royal Court heard that 38-year-old Christopher Charles Williams tried to import the drugs in a parcel sent to him in April last year.
However, it was intercepted by Customs officers, who discovered the drugs inside.
The court also heard that Williams, from Cambridge, was an associate of Sean Alexander Heatlie, who is currently serving a ten-year sentence for drug offences.
Williams was linked to multiple transactions to Heatlie amounting to £6,010.
Williams pleaded guilty to the charges of drug importation and of perverting the course of justice, in wiping messages on his phone.
He was sentenced to a year in prison for the importing of cocaine and a consecutive nine months for perverting the course of justice.
Commissioner Matthew Thompson said the Jurats accepted that Williams pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court, had no relevant previous convictions, and had shown genuine remorse, but told him: “A custodial sentence must be imposed.”
Of wiping the phone messages, he added: “You deliberately frustrated a police investigation.”
The Jurats sitting were Andrew Cornish and David Le Heuzé.
