ORGANISERS of the St Martin’s Bonfire are “very hopeful” that the event will be able to go ahead this year after heavy rainfall and the after-effects of Storm Ciarán saw it called off in 2023.

The charity bonfire night – sponsored by Jersey Mutual and run by volunteers – is due to be held on Saturday 2 November in the field next to St Martin’s parish car park.

The event’s chosen charity for this year is the Jersey Child Care Trust, which promotes high-quality, affordable childcare for families.

Last year, the bonfire was postponed multiple times – and eventually cancelled – amid poor weather, not long after the Island was battered by Storm Ciarán.

Lester Richardson, who chairs the Gorey Fête and St Martin Bonfire Committee, said the team was “very hopeful” it would go ahead this year.

“We are planning everything,” he added.

“We will be shouting about it closer to the time.”

In addition to the bonfire, the event is due to include live music, fire dancers, a Guy competition and a fireworks display, as well as food and drink and other entertainment.
