ONE of the Island’s last remaining nightclubs will close in December in the latest blow to the nightlife industry.
The owners of Havana nightclub took to social media yesterday morning to announce the Bath Street venue was being “forced to close” due to reasons outside their control.
In the statement, the club owners explained that the decision was driven by building works unrelated to the club and that all tenants would have to vacate the building.
The statement continued: “We had some exciting plans for the future but unfortunately the opportunity to make that a reality has been taken away.”
The news that the venue would close its doors for the final time on 22 December follows a string of recent closures including ROJOs, WYSIWYG, Ce Soir and Kokos.
This leaves only three nightclubs remaining on the Island: Vittoria (formerly Mimosa), The Drift at The Royal Yacht and The Watersplash – in addition to bars like Chambers and St James Wine Bar.
The closure particularly impacts those under 21, as the remaining two nightclubs in town cater to older customers.
Club manager Johnny Young, who has been in the industry for four decades, said: “We wanted to thank our local customers and the people who have supported us over the years.”
Speaking about the trend of club closures, the manager warned that fewer regulated venues could push young people toward unmonitored house parties.
“It could lead to situations where drinking is not controlled, and behaviour could spiral out of control,” Mr Young said. “My concern is for the kids who have nowhere to go.”
Speaking to the JEP, Mr Young emphasised that the closure was beyond his businesses control and not something they wanted to do.
“We want to thank our local customers and the people who have supported us over the years,” he added.
Other businesses occupying the building, such as Gracie Barra Jersey Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy have also been asked to leave.
