THE RNLI Jersey’s all-weather lifeboat has been sent to Poole for repairs – which are expected to take a few weeks – after it sustained damage following a fire in the engine room during a recent call-out.

A spokesperson for the search-and-rescue organisation said the mechanical issue which George Sullivan experienced while responding to an incident at the Minquiers earlier this month was still being investigated.

The issue resulted in a fire in the engine room, which has ultimately put the all-weather vessel out of action.

But a relief Tamar-class lifeboat, Peter and Lesley-Jane Nicholson, has arrived in Jersey and entered service immediately.

In an update provided yesterday, an RNLI spokesperson said: “St Helier RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat The George Sullivan is en route to Poole where further investigation and repairs will be carried out.

“This is expected to take a few weeks.”

The spokesperson added: “In the meantime, the relief lifeboat Peter and Lesley-Jane Nicholson will remain in Jersey and provide all-weather lifeboat cover.”
