A RELIEF lifeboat arrived in the Island at the weekend to cover for the RNLI Jersey’s all-weather vessel, which suffered an engine fire during a recent call-out.

A spokesperson for the search-and-rescue organisation said it welcomed the relief Tamar-class lifeboat, Peter and Lesley-Jane Nicholson, on Sunday afternoon.

The George Sullivan all-weather lifeboat is currently out of action, having experienced an “unforeseeable mechanical issue” while responding to an incident at the Minquiers last week.

It was recovered by the inshore lifeboat, after which the RNLI confirmed that all of the crew were “fine”.

An investigation is currently under way into the cause of the problem, which resulted in a fire in the engine room.

The RNLI Jersey spokesperson yesterday said that the damage was still being assessed and it was not yet known how long the repairs will take. But they explained that, because Peter and Lesley-Jane Nicholson is the same class of lifeboat, no additional training is required for the crew.

The organisation also confirmed that the vessel had “entered service immediately”.
