“SIGNIFICANT” proposals for a wind farm in Jersey’s territorial waters are to be scrutinised.
Deputy Hilary Jeune, who is chairing the newly formed Offshore Wind Review Panel, said it would consider the “opportunities and risks” of the proposed development.
In April, the States Assembly approved a proposition to further investigate the opportunity to develop a wind farm, of up to one gigawatt in generating capacity, in the south-west of Jersey’s territorial waters.
The panel’s main objective will be to consider future policy and legislative proposals brought forward by the government stemming from the April vote.
The government is now drafting legislation that will outline how the Island might build a wind farm.
Deputy Jeune said the panel would launch a “full and formal” review, together with a call for evidence, once draft legislation has been lodged. It also plans to hold public hearings and invite submissions.
Deputy Jeune said: “This is a highly significant proposal for Jersey and we have to consider fully the opportunity and risks, both economic and environmental.
“While we wait for the government to bring forward its proposed legislation, we are conducting research and gathering information to inform ourselves.
“We have already received a briefing from the government team putting together the proposals, and will be monitoring progress.”
