JERSEY has been drier, sunnier and a little warmer than average this summer.
Figures published by Jersey Met show that – to the surprise of many Islanders – there were more hours of sunshine in June, July and August this year, and less rainfall, than average levels for the 30 summers between 1991 and 2020.
Typical temperatures were also slightly up on the averages for the time of year.
The Island enjoyed 835 hours of sunshine this summer – compared to an average of 787 hours in the summers from 1991 to 2020.
A total of 122 millimetres of rain fell in Jersey – which was down on the average level of 158 millimetres.
The wettest day was 20 July, when 13 millimetres fell.
But August was drier than average and June was its driest since 2014.
The actual temperature on summer days was close to typical.
The average recorded was 17.8°C. The 30-year average was 17.7°C. However, the average temperature in August alone was higher, at 19.1°C, due mainly to higher temperatures at night.
In August, there were 276 hours of sunshine, again higher than the 249 hours in the Augusts from 1991 to 2020.
And August was much drier than usual, with only 43 millimetres of rain, against an average for that month of 62 millimetres.
