A ROYAL Navy frigate will be on show in Jersey this weekend as part of a visit to “strengthen close ties” with the Island.
HMS Iron Duke arrived in the Elizabeth Harbour yesterday afternoon and was due to be open to the public today from 10.30am to 12pm, and from 3pm to 4pm.
The crew will also participate in various community activities, including Sea Cadet visits, STEM outreach and charity events.
In a statement, the Royal Navy described the visit as a “significant occasion”, intended to “strengthen close ties with the local community” and to “showcase the Royal Navy’s commitment to maritime security”.
HMS Iron Duke’s history includes active service in the Gulf and off the coast of Libya, as well as successful world-wide anti-drug-smuggling operations.
Commander David Armstrong said: “The visit is an excellent opportunity for us to engage with the local community, demonstrate our capabilities and strengthen the bond between the Royal Navy and the people of Jersey.”
While HMS Iron Duke was in refit in 2022, a contingent of her sailors acted as the ceremonial guard to celebrate the Lieutenant-Governor, Vice-Admiral Jerry Kyd’s, appointment that year.
