Ports welcome approval of €150m St Malo ferry terminal upgrade

The new terminal will be on two floors (38826282)

PORTS of Jersey has welcomed the approval of major plans to “modernise” St Malo’s ageing ferry terminal.

The 150-million-euro upgrade to the harbour area, which will also see improved ferry access, was set in motion in 2019 by the Regional Council of Brittany, with formal proposals made public last year.

By that time, they had already received support from Condor Ferries, which said in 2022 that it was fully behind the ambitious project and welcomed the investment commitment made by the region.

The changes include the replacement of the current terminal with a new two-storey building much closer to the road, featuring a restaurant and commercial space.

There will also be a 117-metre-long footbridge connecting the terminal with ferries and various harbour improvements to enable enhanced access for vessels.

The project was deemed “essential for the future of the port of St Malo” by the mayor, Gilles Lurton, who approved the construction permit earlier this month.

In a statement, Ports said: “At Ports of Jersey we work closely with our counterparts in St Malo and are co-operating with our French neighbours to establish a zero-emission shipping route between Jersey and St Malo.

“We are pleased to see that the authorities have now approved proposals to modernise the ferry terminal used by the thousands of Islanders who travel to France every year.”
