Community service for driver who stole alcohol

The Magistrates Court (38781040)

A DELIVERY driver for Liberation Group who stole cases of alcohol on four different occasions has been sentenced to 90 hours of community service and ordered to pay compensation.

Kevin Wayne Goodland (49) took extra cases of beer and wine on deliveries in February and March this year, the Magistrate’s Court heard.

They included Carling, Corona, Foster’s, Madri and Oyster Bay Brewing Company beers, as well as Prosecco.

Crown Advocate Luke Sette, prosecuting, told the court: “He said he had no recollection of it. He had no idea where the cases had gone but must have loaded them and delivered them to clients in error.”

However, Goodland admitted theft and was dismissed from his job.

Advocate Sette pointed out that Goodland had two previous convictions for dishonesty, from 1993 and 2008, and was deemed at moderate risk of reconviction.

But Advocate Chris Baglin, defending, pointed out: “It is 16 years since the last offending.”

He asked for a non-custodial sentence, saying: “He has already lost what was a valued job.”

He added that Goodland had since found new employment.

Relief Magistrate Sarah Fitz told Goodland: “This is not your first breach of trust with your employer.”

But she gave him credit for his early guilty plea and agreed to impose a community service order.

She also ordered him to pay £760 in compensation and added: “I hope we won’t see you back in court again.”
